A first for the Territory. Built for the long haul.

CASE STUDY | 53.5m PBS HAULFORCE SUPERQUAD SIDE TIPPER ROADTRAIN

Darwin Logistics needed something the Northern Territory had never seen before – a 53.5m PBS-approved SuperQuad side tipper road train capable of hauling 128 tonnes of payload through some of Australia’s most demanding conditions. They needed a manufacturer willing to go the distance on a custom build. They chose Duraquip.

A region-first delivery — and a significant one

The HaulFORCE SuperQuad combination delivered to Darwin Logistics is the first of its kind in the Northern Territory – a milestone for Darwin Logistics, for Duraquip, and for the region’s mining haulage industry.

Side tippers are the backbone of mining haulage in Australia, with rigs hauling up to 155 tonnes of payload in nearby regions and significantly more in off-road applications. This combination raises the bar for what’s possible on NT roads, rolling at 181.5 tonnes gross combination weight across 53.5 metres of road train.

The outfit runs on SAF airbag suspension with disc brake axles, 11 lift-up axles for the empty leg, 94 wheels, and Duraquip’s patented Bullhorn anti-roll coupling system. Crucially, it can be towed by a tandem drive prime mover – a meaningful advantage in a region where tri-drive has historically been required for this class of rig..

Designed Smart. Built Tough.

Darwin Logistics didn’t want a standard solution. The NT’s extreme heat, long haul distances, and payload efficiency demands required a custom build – and a manufacturer willing to engage seriously with the challenge.

“We partnered with Duraquip because we were looking for someone that could build us PBS-approved trailers for the Territory’s tough conditions,” says Jake from Darwin Logistics. “Duraquip stood out for their innovation, track record, and willingness to collaborate on a custom build for the NT.”

The team flew down to Gnowangerup to meet the Duraquip engineers and see the workshop firsthand. That level of transparency and involvement in the build process is something Jake points to as a key part of why the relationship worked.

“They didn’t push us for a one-size-fits-all. They listened to what we needed and they built based on that.”

Seamless PBS approval. Zero surprises.

For Darwin Logistics, working with a manufacturer building for the NT for the first time could have meant friction – regulatory complexity, back-and-forth with the Department of Logistics and Infrastructure in the NT (NHVR), and delays. That’s not how it went.

“From day one, they dealt with the NHVR all the way through the PBS process,” Jake explains. “We’ve had minimal input, which has been great for us, and it’s been seamless – right up until today when we did our PBS drive down the Arnhem Highway, and everything was approved.”

Duraquip managed the regulatory process from WA, coordinating with NT authorities without putting the burden back on the customer. Final PBS approval on the day of delivery confirmed the combination performed exactly as designed: compliant, efficient, and stable.

128 tonnes. A step change in productivity.

The commercial outcome is straightforward. The HaulFORCE SuperQuad gives Jake’s operation a 128-tonne payload – a significant productivity gain over the existing quad trains operating in the region. More tonnes per trip, over long distances, in extreme heat. That’s the kind of efficiency that changes a haulage business’s bottom line.

“Capacity and durability were the reasons that we selected the SuperQuad for our purpose,” says Jake. “Today’s final PBS approval was a success. They performed exactly as we had hoped. It just confirms that we made the right decision.”

The combination also discharges without stopping or breaking up the road train – a further efficiency gain that keeps turnaround times tight on long-haul operations.

Proactive. Flexible. Highly recommended.

Jake’s summary of the experience is unequivocal.

“I would highly recommend Duraquip. They’ve been a pleasure to deal with from day one. The whole process has been absolutely perfect. They’ve been proactive and flexible all the way through. They catered to the operational needs that we had.”

For Duraquip, delivering the NT’s first SuperQuad side tipper road train is a testament to what’s possible when engineering capability meets genuine collaboration – across state lines, across regulatory boundaries, and built from scratch for a region that demands the best.

Ready to move more, further?

The HaulFORCE range is built for Australia’s most demanding mining and long-haul transport operations. PBS-engineered, custom-built, and backed by a team that manages the process end to end.
